The UK Government's Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has launched a new Quality Assurance Scheme for carbon offsetting.
The Quality Assurance Scheme (previously known as DEFRA's Code of Best Practice for Carbon Offsetting) is part of a wider government-led strategy to persuade businesses to reduce their carbon emissions. The UK government recommends that measuring and reducing CO2 emissions are the first steps we should take to lower our impact on climate change.
UK Grid takes its impact on the environment very seriously and thus operates a carbon balanced data centre strategy. UK Grid’s Synergy House is one of the first data centres globally to achieve a reduced carbon footprint through carbon neutralisation and aims to be completely carbon neutral by 2010.
UK Grid’s data centre carbon offsetting is achieved by following Carbon Passport’s guidelines and their government approved method of carbon footprint calculation. Carbon Passport offset UK Grid’s carbon footprint by buying credits called Certified Emission Reductions (CERs).
CERs are only issued to projects approved under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Treaty. These projects are subjected to rigorous qualification procedures and ongoing monitoring. CERs are only awarded to projects that would not have taken place without the revenue from CERs.
CERs help to fund projects in the developing world which reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Examples include wind farms, energy efficiency projects and electricity generation from landfill gas. The UNFCC website provides details of all registered projects.
